I am not sure how you deleted it originally and it has to be done correctly, here is a guide and then you could reload correctly. Dave

IE5 how to uninstall

How to Uninstall Internet Explorer 5.5
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q257/2/34.asp?LN=EN-US&SD=gn&FR=0

I think after the uninstall of Internet Explorer there are registry settings and some IE files left behind.

Try to remove the rest of IE with the IEradicator from http://www.98lite.net/download.html.

Do the file export as suggested above, saving to something other than the default directory to save your bookmarks. Then do a Start > Run > sfc to check for corrupted system files. Replace any damaged files, then go to Windows Update and do critical and driver updates.

When you did the virus scan, did you have a current data file? If more than a few weeks old, check for an update and scan again if there is one.

You may need a free web based antivirus, since newer viruses disable the local antivirus program !

It needs to download a few file so be patient.

I hope this helps !

Have you tried deleting the c:\windows\temporary internet files directory.  A lot of time a corrupt file will cause this.  It's quick and if it works it your easiest solution.

Have you tried any of these suggestions yet? If you want to do an uninstall then reinstall of the latest version, first go to the Windows Update site and choose to install the latest IE 6 version. Rather than taking the default options, choose a custom install and download all components to a directory on your local hard drive. C:\Install might be a good place if you first create that directory. Doing it this way will let you do the reinstall without connectivity after you do the uninstall.

Are you on dialup or broadband? Let us know what kind of connection you have. It just might be that something other than IE is causing very slow connections. Watch the download speed and see if that is normal. If downloads are very slow then it may not be IE that is causing the problem. http://bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/ is one of the places you can check your connection speed.

One of the things (besides a virus) that can cause this type of problem is adware/scumware/spyware. Go to tucows.com, download ad-aware (it's free), install and run it to get rid of garbage software on your system.

for tanint downloaded scumware spyware came up with 50 items now what alot of gator in there also don't know what the rest is.
Commented:
You have the option to back up the adware, but I have never seen any of it do something you couldn't do a better way. Just zap all of it, then run ad-aware again after a reboot.

For IE6, look in the options/custom install for a full install. I can't give you the exact clicks because my system is different from yours. If you start the download, it should list some options. Or go instead to one of the shareware sites such as
http://tde.tucows.com/preview/193778.html  and download it.
