How do I reference test data with SQL Server 2000?

I have a production server (SQL Server 2000) with my production database on it.  In a specific application, we reference the server on numerous places.  Should we have a test-data directory on the server, what is an easy way to swing between accessing the prod and the test environment?  One option is probably creating a script to change the reference from prod to test db in our code.  Is there any other way you could suggest overcoming this problem?

Use a properties file or set the db init stuff in web.xml.

Personally I like the properties file, b/c you can encrypt the data and store it on your prod server.
