Hello,
A few times a week I get Spam though my Messanger Service. A dialog box will come up offering me some sort of psychic or porn services. Can I prevent this from happening?
Thanks

Same here.  I'd like to know how also but I'm afraid that there is no simple solution...

I thought you liked spam jhance, you know spam and cheese sandwich, spam casserole… :>)

Actually, the kind of SPAM you get in the grocery store is not bad.

When I was a kid my mother would cut it into slices and pan fry the pieces.  Pretty good on a sandwich with some spicy mustard...

Just had some last night.
There are two ways to prevent this:

1) Disable the Messenger service - may cause problems depending on your system configuration
2) Install a personal firewall

jjmck,

I think you've misunderstood this question:

1) This is due to MSN Messenger NOT Windows Messenger Service.  There _IS_ a difference.

2) A firewall WILL NOT stop this since you've already bypassed it in order to use MSN Messenger.
Sorry, I did misunderstand. The is a new type of spam which uses the Windows Messenger Service. I though that was what you were referring to.

Actually, after re-reading the question again, I'm now not so sure.

I have received Windows messenger SPAM and that was easily resolved by disabling the messenger service.

I have more recently been getting MSN IM/Instant Messenger SPAM from "sexy-heather" and others.  I don't know how these are getting in and I don't know how to stop them.

jjmck,
You understood the problem correctly.
A firewall is not good (at least the inexpensive ones we have) as I have a couple of IP's dedicated to my computer and our cheapo's only allow one IP to be assigned to them.
Aside from not getting any UPS and printing messages what are the other problems can arise?

Thanks.
The only other problems that could crop up is if you have any other services installed that are dependent on the Messenger Service. What I would do is disable the service, reboot the PC and see if any other services fail to start. If everything starts, you will only be inconvenienced by not getting messages. As for Firewalls, have you tried Zone Alarm Pro?

Thanks for you help. I will give it a shot.
As for Zone Alarm Pro, I have tried it and didn't like it. For some strange reason it causes true chaos with my mail program.
Thanks again.
