few days back i downloaded windows XP with windows 98 , now iam having some missing files (.Dll files and some other files) when i run windows 98.By the way Windows XP is running fine.

Can you tell me how can i recover these missing files and what would be the right steps.i don't want to install windows 98 again. i know what are the missing files i just need to know how can i fix it.

One more question, on my other pc i downloaded Windows 2000 server with windows 98. now the problem is till few days back, windows 2000 server was running fine now it displays an Error message of "Run Time, Error", specially when i connect on internet. Except this my windows 98 is just runing fine. i don't see any missing file on  this OS.

I really appreciate for your help!

What do you mean you downloaded XP and 2000? Please explain. Thanks
What dll files are showing missing? You may have a virus?
Need more info! Thanks, Dave

Thanks tanjnt,

Now my windows 2000 Server is just working fine, I did use the same method which u suggested me " Sfc".

Iam still hoping if you can answer my second question which was about Windows 98.

thanks again !
Rashid Hussain.
sfc should work for 98 if corrupted or missing system files are the problem. You may also have other problems, such as a virus or corrupted applications.

Sure. Here's a link to most of the Windoze reinstall situations:
http://www.windowsreinstall.com/  Read up on the type of install you want to do. The information is generally detailed, and in easy to follow steps.

When you do the "Full" install of XP on a machine with Win98, it gives you the option to keep your Win98 install and to do partitioning. FAT32 is best for Win98, while NTFS is best for Win 2k and Win XP.

If you have your drive backed up, which you should do anyway, you can also repartition with standard utilities like fdisk and format, but you will lose ALL data on the drive. A lot of people will tell you to do a clean reinstall of Win98 about once per year anyway to get rid of .dll version conflicts, memory leaks, and other garbage. The problems with this approach are that it is time consuming, 2 to 8 hours depending on how many apps you need to reinstall, and that you MUST be certain that you have a tested backup of all your data.

To repartition a current drive without losing anything, you really need something like Partition Magic. It is also helpful to have drive imaging software such as Ghost or Drive Image. A good drive image will let you do a full system restore in 20 to 60 minutes, and fully recover from anything but theft or a hardware failure.

Read up on these topics, then get back to me with any questions you have.
Thanks,
Tanjnt.
