Does windows 2000 Active Directory require the Microsoft DNS be installed somewhere in the network or can I use a DNS running on a Unix sytem?  Are there any drawbacks or considerations?

You need the m$dns installed ...

you don't need MS DNS.  If your Unix server has BIND 8.x and above, you can use it to support AD.
