how can i get all the Ip's in a linux network (my instructor said to search for a file which has all the ip's)? please help me as soon as possible

arp cache may have most of it, but that will not be in a file. Check your /etc/hosts file to see what is in there.

ya i tried but it displays a loop back ip and server ip

how can one get all ip addresses being in  host computer

is it really possible please clear my doubt.and what could be the device file

There is a program that "snif's" your network, maybee that will be usefull for you.
The program is called "iptraf" most dists have it on there CD.. try to install that.

Irmoore : in the /etc/hosts file are only the IP that are added manually, NOT all the ip's used on the network.

If the linux is a DNS server then all the IP's are collected in the DNS file.

So.. i disagree with "RECOMMENDATION: Points awarded to: lrmoore".

My opinion, close the Q and remove send the points into /dev/null

I have no problem with that. I only suggested the etc/hosts file because the question was specific to "search for a file"
Even though the file is manually created, so is the DNS database.
