I am trying to load an image in java that has the transparency infomation from a 24-bit png file. The file is a image that has transparent edges so that it blends in with my background. But it just comes up with an white outline. Its there any way of doing this?

Transparent images should work fine.
How are you loading, and painting it?
Perhaps it's related to the PNG decoder. As a test try loading a GIF with some transparency and see if that works.
