W2k VPN from W98 cybercafe

I have a network at home with W2k and W98 computers using ICS on a W2k machine for internet access. The W2k has BlackIce Defender and ZoneAlarm as a virtual firewall. I have radio ADSL with a fixed IP address and perminent connection.

Unfortunately I am working over 400 miles from home in the week and I want to access my network. I can use a cybercafe for several hours each night. The PCs have W98 installed.

Is it feasible to set up a VPN on one of my home W2k machines (I understand it cannot be the ICS machine). What is involved in making a connection from the W98 machine remembering that I may have to install the VPN client each time I visit the cybercafe. (they reset the machines each night).

Are there any good on-line step by step instructions telling me how to set up the W2k end and the W98 end.

Just seen another article here that suggests that I cannot set my W2K professional system up as a VPN Host. That may be the biggest hurdle. Although I think I have a W2k server disk somewhere.

W2K Server can be setup as a vpn host and this article tells you how:

But I think your main problem will be the connectivity seid of things. Can you give more info on your internet connection, how does you ICS machine connect to the internet?

Connectivity is not a problem. The ICS computer is a permanent connection to the Internet using Radio ADSL (I think) with a fixed IP address. The client end is not always the same machine (being in a cyber cafe).

The approach I am looking at at the moment is to get a lap top which I can connect into the cyber cafe at times. I still have not resolved the host end. i.e. can I set up a VPN on a W2k professional system.

Of course you can - you just need the right software (assuming a PPTP server was not included in your distro).  If the cybercafe machines have the MS VPN adapter installed by default, then all you would have to do is fire it up, enter the IP of your w2k server, type in your username/passwd, and all should be well.

If all you want to do is transfer files or run PCanywhere, you could just run an SSH server on the w2k box, and run an ssh client at the cybercafe, and forward the appropriate port(s) for your file transfer app over the ssh connection.  Not to tough, really.

Let me know if you need more clarification...
