Back up all data on your primary master drive ASAP, then take the drive to the manufacturer to have it checked for hardware problems.

Definitely backup all your data first, then

I would recommend that you download a diagnostic disk from your harddrive manufacturer's url. This will tell you right off where you are at and if
you can recover from it. It may be under warranty, the hard drives are usually covered for three years and you can make out the RMA on their site                 also. Depending on the manufacturer of the hard drive, you can download diagnostic utilities from their sites to check the drives.

As already suggested, backup all important data.  What you can also do, if you find out the make and model of the drive as sysexpert has said, some of the manufacturers, will ship out a new drive instantly, if the old drive is under warranty, and you have a credit card to back up the hard drive return.  They will not charge your card unless they do not receive the bad drive.

bad drive back to them.

just for an extra note, i would, if possible, take the drive out for backing up to another system as a slave, then it won't need to use the system files, creating less work for the hard drive to do, and more likelyhood that you will get all of your data that you need.

thanks you all for the comments.

but I don't have the slave drive, I get a warranty drive, and I have to give back the old drive. and my CD reader can not write.

thanks again.

I had this same problem last week. I had my user make sure to save all her files to the network drive and we swapped out harddrives. I ran a thorough scandisk and no problems or errors appeared. I then ran a full defragment and received no bad clusters. I then rebooted and no longer received the message. I have been testing it for the last 3 days and it appears to be fine now. Before you call compaq you might want to try this first. Also, if your computer is not under warranty i do not suggest buying the replacement harddrive from Compaq because they are pricey.
