ok, i'm pretty much a newbie when it comes to linux, but i wanted to switch my serevr form XP over to Redhat 8.0, so i did. I got apache and php working, but i cannot seem to get the mysql installed with redhat to work, and when i try and install 4.0, i get package errors. When i try and connect to mysql, i get this error:

ERROR 2002: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)

I'm pretty sure this is just somethign easy that a newbie just doesnt get, thanks for your help.

Problem is that i dont have mysql.sock anywhere on my hard drive. I re-installed mysql and that didnt work.
mysql.sock will be created by mysqld, if it is not there your mysqld is running on internet sockets (see URL)
