samsung combo sm 332 can't read cd-rw disk
Hi,
I just bought the Samsung CDRW/DVDROM COMBO drive
(CDR32x CDRW10x CDROM40x DVDROM12x).
I can play my DVDs, burn my CDRs just fine. But when i tried to burn CDRWs, the drive won't be able to detect the disk! Samsung bundled the drive with 1 CDR and 1 CDRW(4x-10x). The CDR disk works fine but it's not able to detect the CDRW disk.
At first I thought it would probably be the drive's problem, then i tried inserting another CDRW disk(Imation CDRW 1x-4x compatible) and my drive seems to be able to detect that! The InCD software automatically detects that and prompts me to do a format on the disk. I did the formatting and later on, everything works just fine (copying of files and deleting was a breeze!).
Assuming that the problem may rest on the CDRW which was bundled with the drive, I bought another CDRW today, a Duraplus CDRW 1x-4x. After I had inserted the disk, nothing happens! (The exact same scenario as the Samsung CDRW disk which was bundled with the drive)
I launched InCD myself (and later on, Nero as well) but still its not able to detect the disk in the drive. I'd tried checking the manual on the troubleshooting section but nothing was mentioned there about the problem i'm facing. I've gone to Samsung's support site and have a look at their FAQs and Tech Support but still nothing was mentioned about this.
Does anyone knows what may be the problem and how can i resolve it? Thanks!

You may need this one instead:

Check what Nero/InCD says the exact model of the drive is (SM-332 is maybe different that SM-332B or SM-332_DOM.
Actually you're probably best using this one I've linked in this update anyway.

How do i know if my CD-RWs are preformatted for DirectCD?
I read about some incompatibility issues somewhere on the web too but I'm not sure what exactly is DirectCD. Some sort of CD burning utility like Nero perhaps?

I just did the firmware update you recommended, but its still the same. I had version 405 previously, now its 401...a downgrade on the firmware perhaps? :)
Well the discs would probably say "preformatted for DirectCD". Have you tried using Nero's "Erase ReWritable" function on the Recorder menu on the CDRWs that won't read?
If its just a brand issue...it may be that these "Duraplus" discs just aren't very good quality. Have you tried any other discs, especially HS-CDRW (HighSpeed, your drive does 10X CDRW)?

yep, i tried other discs..a Samsung 4x-10x CD-RW, but its not able to detect that as well..(this disc comes together with the drive but its not compatible?)
Nero's Erase ReWritable function doesn't work either, it says "Medium not present, pls insert a rewritable disc"..the fact is, the disc is already in the drive!
I've tried almost everything but still not able to figure out what's wrong...pls advise.

anyway, thanks for advise.
OK...but I would still at least check into returning the drive...clearly there is something wrong with it if if will only read 1 or 2 brands of disc...

And, these CD-RW discs aren't "preformatted" for DirectCD are they? That could cause problems if so.
