i don't know if this will help in your situation, but if you are using pl/sql you could so something like:

declare
my_var long (15);
begin
select my_long into my_var from long_table;
my_var := my_var || 'abc';
update long_table set my_long = my_var;
end;

this will append 'abc' to whatever your long value was. is this what you had in mind? if not, post back with more details and maybe i can help more.

This was not the perfect solution that i looking for , i thought there is a function can do this by execute a single sql statement like 'update table_a set long1=long1 || function(string value)' . Anyway, seem like your suggestion is the best for me,,,Thx
