Crystal Reports query

Hi,

Am using Crystal Reports with VB.NET and I have a tricky situation. I've in a database a long list of entries of test cases for testing a machine grouped by the type of testing. Say a car..

Lights (Group Head)
  Side lights
  Head lights
  Rear lights
  Indicator

Brake
  Front,
  Rear... and so on..

I've to create a report that would generate a check list. I've grouped it and the report is created without pain. But now, the report runs to pages as I have so many test cases. I wish to have it in the same page. Like I would like to have the page divided into 2 and display the test cases in 2 panes.

ie, once the end of the page comes when displaying from the database I would like it to be displayed in the second pane of the same page instead of running to the second page.

Is there any option for me to do it with Crystal reports?

Please bear with my long question..

What do you mean two panes?

Can you give an example of the output you want?

To avoid new pages make sure none of the groups have
KEEP TOGETEHR or NEW PAGE BEFORE  or NEW PAGE AFTER set.

Select a section
Click FORMAT --> SECTION
Select each section in turn and make sure none of the check boxes are clicked.

Thanks for your response. 2 panes in a page which I meant is like this..

say this is the report normally..

Page 1 >>

A
 a1
 a2
 a3

B
 b1
 b2

And page 2
C
 C1
 C2
 C3

If I have all these values from a table, then I would get a report like this, where it runs to second page when the data is more.

But I would like to have a report like this..

Page 1

A

When it comes to end of the page, instead of running to the second page, I would ideally like it to print it in the same page, as mentioned above. (Split the page vertically into 2 and display values). And moreover, since my display texts are very small, I would better find this layout helpful rather to run pages.

Hope am clear with what I mean.

Hi mlmcc,

Thanks for your help. I need one more help in Crystal Reports. I would like to dynamically change an image based on a flag value in the database. Like say I have a value in database which indicates pass or fail and based on the value I would ideally like to place an image of a checkbox ticked when it is pass or a blank checkmark when it is failed. Can I do it?

Yes.

Two ways come to mind.
1 Using actual images
Open the report in Crystal
Put both images on the report.  One on top of the other
Select the checked image
Conditionally suppress it
Formula will be
{DatabaseValue} = 'FAIL'
Select the unchecked image
Conditionally suppress it
Formula will be
{DatabaseValue} = 'PASS'

2.  Using a formula
Open the report in Crystal
Create a formula
If {DatabaseValue} = "PASS" then
'X'
Else
' '
Endif

Put the formula on the report where you want it.
Right Click the formula box
Select Format
One option is to put a border around it.
Set the border to single (all 4 sides)
Save the report
This will have X in a box when PASS and an empty box when FAIL

Thanks.. it works fine but now coming up with a new issue.

The issue now is, everything is fine when I have a report with groups, sub groups and details with a single image displayed in the details pane. The moment I add a second image in the details page at the end of the multi column report, the report fails to load.

I don't do anything else apart from loading a new image and the moment I do it, it fails to load. Is there any specific reason?

I have never used images so I can't say.  Recommend you ask a new question.
