Floppy disk controller reported an error...

I recently installed Win2k fresh(+ sp3) on an NTFS volume on a Dell C400 laptop with A09 revision bios flashed shortly after i finished installing Win2k(so I do not know if this might have caused the problem..). Regardless, whenever I try to copy something to the floppy(either in 'dos' prompt or through explorer) I get the above mentioned message, which in its entirety reads:'The floppy disk controller reported an error that is not recognized by the floppy disk driver'.

I've tried unistalling the floppy disk and the floppy disk controller through the control panel, to no luck. I checked the bios for anything that might cause problems, but I didn't see anything(these days there's hardly any options as far as floppy goes), so I do not know what else to do. The thing is, the drive does read, as in, I can see whats in it, and I can even change the label and format them, I just can't copy anything to or from them!

I just spent the last 10 hours reinstalling all my software and I really don't want to imagine its something to do with the Win2k installation! Any help appreciated.

Try to borrow an fdd from someone and see if it works in your machine. If it doesn't work it's more than likely the connection is faulty with the m/b. Pull out and re-seat.

I believe fdd's from Dell are specific to their kit so only they will be able to supply a repacement - all the same it shouldn't be too expensive.

Good luck

I would like to know the resolution. How was it fixed?
no feedback, nothing :~(
I'm going to assume that's an objection.

Uh, well, sorry folks for not keeping you updated. I have a docking station which I docked the laptop into and the floppy drive worked fine. So I assumed maybe its the cable that connects the laptop and the drive, okay. Well, I later tried to do just that, and it worked fine. I really don't know what happened, especially since the first time I tried to troubleshoot this(and the reason why I posted the question) I rebooted, played with settings and all, to no avail. The problem just kinda fixed itself.

As for the bios suggestion, which comes from steven who apparently is objecting, I tried that before I posted the question, and Dell laptops are so 'smart' that they will not let you downgrade the bios flash. oh well. :) If there are no more objections, I'd like to close the question.

Thanks for all though!
Well with no feedback (the interactive part of an interactive help site), I wanted to know what transpired. Now I know, and withdraw my objection
