Failing over not happening in the Lotus Notes cluster server

Hi,

Recently i have implemented cluster in my office. One is a primary server and another is a secondary server. Both of them are in a cluster. Cluster replication is happening perfectly.
But when i shutdown the primary server for backup and someone tries to open the database i am getting the following error message

"Unable to redirect failover from Server Name!!mail\username.nsf for replica id xxxxxxxx:xxxxxxxx"

Both the servers are in the LAN and are sharing the same Domino directory.

I would appreciate if anyone could sort out the problem.

Thanks
Subbu

This may seem kind of obvious, but is there actually a replica of said mail file on both servers?

Commented:
To check this, right click the mail file icon on the primary server and choose Replication -> Find Replica and type in the name of the secondary server. Let us know if the replica exists on the secondary server or not.

Also, check the ACL on each replica. Are they the same? Is the replication setting "Do not send changes in local security property" checked? If so, you should try unchecking it on each replica.

This is probably the most important thing to check: Is the user actually able to open his mail file from the secondary server when nothing is wrong (i.e. both servers are up)? What happens when he manually does File -> Database -> Open and selects his mail file on the secondary server? If he gets an error here, then it's likely that failover when the primary server is down won't work either. If he does get an error message here, let us know exactly what the error message is.

Hope this helps.

Scott is pointing you to the right direction,
but I would like to know what you mean whit this statement:
"...and are sharing the same Domino directory."

Oh, one more.

Try this Domino console command on BOTH servers before bringing the one server down for backup:

DROP ALL

Hi All,

Thanks for your reply. The problem stills persists.

1. Replica file is present in both the server.
2. ACL is same in both the replica.
3. As suggested by Scott, i have unchecked the replication setting "Do not send changes in local security property" checked?
4. I am able to open the mail from the secondary server when the both the servers are up and running.
5. I am also able to open my mail file manually from the secondary server when the primary server is down.

Thanks

Do you address your servers by server name or cluster name? you should address them by cluster name.... Use a connexion document in your local address book to achieve that.

Hi Abdel,

Thanks for your response.

Can u throw up more light on how to do it?

Thanks

Commented:
Hi subbu,

when creating a connexion document, instead of specifiying the server name (i.e: Acme01/MyOU/MyOrg), just specify the cluster name that is in your Public address book (i.e: MyCluster)

hope it'll help

What version of Domino are you running? Also, is this happening with just one database (if so, are both replicas of this database listed in the cldbdir.nsf?) or all databases in the cluster?

Commented:
Hi,

As suggested by Abdel, i have specified the clustername in the connection document instead of servername.

But still the same problem persists.

I am running Domino v 5.0.9. The problem is for all the database. (Clarifications for queries asked by Scott)

Thanks

Hello Subbu,

did you the "drop all" advise before stopping the server?

Commented:
Hi All,

At last the problem got solved. I made a silly(costly) mistake by specifying the hostname incorrectly in Server document-Fully qualified host name under Basic Tab.

Thanks
Subbu
