Distiller Errorr:PDF not made

Having a problem making a PDF from an illustrator 8.0.1 document. It converts to postscript just fine, but when the pdf rips through distiller, it leaves an error log which says PDF not made. I know there is an art element provided by a client(a photoshop eps) that seems to be the cause of the problem. the client claims the art is giving us a hard time because it was created in Illustrator 10, but I'm not buying it.

Seems like the file is too complex....too many gradients maybe? In any case, when that particular EPS is deleted, the file PDFs fine.

My question is: is there a chance that a file created in Illy 10 would give me problems in an Illy 8 file? We haven't made the switch to Illustrator 10 yet, and I'd rather not do it just to please one client out of 50.

Basically, you should be using Illy 10 anyway, but yes, its quite possible that an illy 10 embedded eps could give you problems in Illy 8. There are things that Illy 10 can do that Illy 8 cant even dream up or reproduce.

Ok, thanks. I'm gonna upgrade everyone to Illy 10 then. Been sitting on it mostly because of the learning curve is so deadly around this office for upgrades in software. People flounder trying to figure out how to do things they used to know in earlier versions and ask ME how to do stuff. I kindly offer them the Classroom in a Book or the Help menu in the app itself.

Any other compatiblity issues to speak of with Illy 10? I'm afraid that all the other service bureaus and clients who haven't upgraded will have problems with our files?

Oh, and I'm leaving you some points for a question you answered previously about installing PCI cards. Grab em! Thanks again, Weed.
If youre using illy 10 you can always save them as earlier versions. Also, illy's native file format is PDF which makes it compatible with everything.
I've heard you say this about Illustrator and PDF before but I don't know what you mean. I know you've always been able to EXPORT an Illy doc as a PDF before. Are you saying that this is something exclusive to Illustrator 10 or that it's always been this way?

And as for saving as earlier versions....won't that mean not using transparencies and other things used in Illy 9 and 10 because they will be lost to Illustrator 8 users?

And just as an aside...do you find that most people you deal with are using 10 now? Trying to get a sense of what kind of "industry standard" there is in graphic design.

Oh yeah? Cool. I never liked the way Quark customer service was. And buying licensing for an office was like putting a kid through college. But we don't really use Quark much anymore anyway. Illustrator, Photoshop, and the Microsoft Office bundle is pretty much it. Thanks again Weed, and don't forget to snag those points I left ya.
