This is a new build.  Nothing on it except the RAM (1Gb DDR333) Video (above) and WD HDDs (2),DVD and CDRW.  Not able to install Windows XP due to hardware errors.  Can install Win98se but crashes when installing NVIDIA 4-in-1 drivers for 98/ME.

Have tried several different things but excapes me at the moment as to what.

What errors are you getting Sandi?

This is what I would do. I would strip it down to one module of RAM, a mouse, keyboard, floppy, one hard drive, the CDRW (Unplug the DVD), video and see if XP will install. If so then reintroduce the other devices one item at a time.

If the mouse and/or keyboard are USB I would use the standard keyboard and mouse plug instead of the USB temporarily. If either is cordless I would then use non cordless again temporarily.

Also is the BIOS up to date?

May be unsufficient power ?/Try to install with less memory and only one (CDRW) drive/

You have a lot of ram, set AGP aperture size to min 128 (or 256MB).

JEEZE!  With no notifs it makes it hard to respond.

Den...I think those are the same drivers that came with the CD as 98/ME or 2000.

Spence... That's what I started out with and insisted upon.  No go.

Freeco2k & 1175089 I will try those suggestions in a few minutes and get back to you.

Thank you all for responding.

Sandi the version of those nvida drivers have been causing a lot people problems. Try using a version in 31.xx range

And what are the errors you are getting from XP.

Also did you decrease the amount of on the board before intalling XP?

I agree with 117...sounds like a power issue possibly.  What CPU speed are you using?  Is the FSB set correctly (should be 166 for the newer AthlonXPs, but 133 as a standby to test).  What brand is the RAM?  If its no-name, you might have a compatibility issue; the nForce2 needs some pretty high-quality RAM.

Updated nForce2 drivers (note problems listed for your board with the audio system further down the page):

Tried updating the BIOS:

dew: long time no see!

Sandi,

98 may be crashing because of the video as well as the 1GB of memory.

Try stripping the machine down by removing the video card and using the on-board video. Use basic devices such as PS2 mouse and keyboard if you're using USB or firewire, and then retry XP.

Also, do you have the RAM in slots 1 and 2 (not 2 & 3) as this could cause some problems with the dual channel DDR system the nf2 uses...

Commented:
Agree with Dennis Win98 may be coking on the high amount of RAM. Win98 tends to operate better with 512MBS of RAM or less alhough it is suppose to handle more then 512MBS.

Couldn't resist

OK now back to Sandi's problem, What MB is this?
Can you try a different video card to see if that is the main issue? some video cards will not work correctly with certain chipset on the MB.

LOL  Spence, I want some of what you're smoking man.

The RAM is Samsung and not overclocked.

We got 98se to install without drivers for the mobo or video and now XP is finally trying to upgrade after a couple BSODs but I did change the AGP aperture rating to 256Mb.  Still haven't installed any drivers for anything yet.  Going to try to get it to run without them for a bit first to stabilize the system.

Got a copy of the NForce 2.0 drivers and Detonator 40.72 drivers.  Any thoughts?

So far the dang thing is running great in XP without drivers!!!

I'm probably going to award points to 1175089 at this point for jogging my memory on the aperture rating.  Jeeze! I can't believe I didn't think of that.  But then again, it's kind of hard to think when you've got a man standing there yelling at you that "This freaking thing better work woman!!!"  If I could've gotten him out of the house for a few I probably wouldn't be here.  LOL

Should have sent him on a beer and pizza run.
