Weed you there?

Sorry to bother you again for the 10,000 time!! :-) LOL  It's about Norton SystemWorks. Do you have Norton SystemWorks 2.0?  Because I'm trying to do what you told me to do. You told me to uninstall it and just install NAV. I'm doing it the way you told me but its not working like that. What do I do? You told me to NOT to install SpeedDisk and Disk Doctor right? To instead run it off the CD right? But whats running off of the CD is a older version! How would the program know to optimize my JAGUAR HD when the CD is based on MAC OS 9?

OH YEAH! A question that I forgot to ask you.  I don't use the mouse that came with my MAC.  Instead I use a Microsoft Optical mouse with 2 buttons and a wheel. But something I noticed whether I use the MAC mouse or Microsoft mouse is that neither is quite as accurate as it is on a PC. Why is this? It has nothing to do with drivers because the Microsoft mouse has its drivers installed. Both the MAC mouse and Microsoft Mouse work great on a PC but on the MAC its not so great. I have some friends that use MAC and they too notice that. Why is this Weed?
When you boot from the CD youre booting into OS 9. The version of norton that you end up using works just fine on Jaguar systems.

Mice have a "resolution". They scan the surface theyre used on so many millions of times a second. That doesnt change in different OS versions. It's a hardware thing. What youre most likely noticing is differences in the acceleration curve. The microsoft software SHOULD allow you to adjust the acceleration curve to something you like better.
Ok weed. Hey man I just like to say thanks for helping me out with my first MAC. Well...actually its not my first MAC. My first MAC was an Apple IIc, or something like that, but that was YEARS AGO! But I really appreciate what you've done for me and to help me make the transition from PC to MAC. By the way...I'm kind of confused on which browser to take up. It's between Chimera and Mozilla. They're both good but I'm still confused. What do you think?
Oh darn! I forgot again to ask you seomthing. If I decide to stay with either Mozilla or chimera....should I uninstall the other browser and/or IE?
I like Mozilla. Way more features, just as fast. Today apple released its own browser based on the same engines. You can get it at apple.com. Its got more features than Chimera, less than mozilla, but faster than both. It's called Safari. Im still using mozilla. You dont have to uninstall IE but I do anyway. I dont allow MS products on my Macs.
No MS products? why is that? is that bad for my MAC computer?
No...but it's probably bad for your sanity.
MS products are buggy as all hell and more often than not, a security risk. I sleep better, and my computer has less problems, when its MS free.
So should I uninstall MS OFFICE FOR MAC RIGHT NOW??!!! And the same for MSN messenger??
You dont have to, but hey, if you want your system to run smoother, and not have the evil empire taking over your computer go ahead and uninstall it. Its ALOT harder than you think to get rid of all traces of MS. They like to install garbage ALL over the place.
DAMN!!!  I'm a bit confused now because I kind of like both Office and Messenger.
I mean lets face it Weed, I don't think Appleworks is better then MS office. What do you think? As for MSN messenger...I don't care for it. I just want to be able to talk to my msn buddies. I tried Fire which was OK, but what I didnt like about it was that everytime I would finish typing, it would still say "sithlord is typing a message" for about 10 seconds after I have finished typing.
BTW...Navigator and Mozilla are faster for me than Safari.
If ya like them, keep them. But when things go wrong with them you know where to point the finger..heh

AppleWorks does the job for me. I dont need 1/20th of the junk thrown into Word. In fact i could do all of my word processing in TextEdit and certainly in BBEdit.

Nav is definitely slower, but Mozilla and Safari should be pretty close to the same speed. You may be loading out of cache in Mozilla which is why it seems faster. Safari is definitely fast, and even faster at pulling out of cache than mozilla. Mozilla is still my first choice.
So should I disable cache? Now I'm not going against you in any Weed. I trust your word on this matter. But why is it that MS office might do damage on my MAC? Is it MS office itself? Or is it through downloading stuff via the internet that might contain macros? Or is it from sharing documents with others? And besides MSN messenger...what else can I use to chat with my MSN buddies? I'm upping the points again on this post.
Norton AV comes with Autoprotect. Someone told me that they have NAV on their MAC but that they disabled Autoprotect. That they did this because leaving it on slows down your computer a bit because of the fact that it scans EVERYTHING that you do including emails. What do you think about this?
To do proper browser benchmarking you delete the cache you have, then load a few pages. That way you know its not pulling out of cache. You dont have to permanently turn cache off. Just delete it before testing.

MS Office 1) is Buggy as all hell and likely to crash 2) has questionable privacy issues 3) has a questionable user license 4) likes to splatter stuff ALL over you system which is just plain bad form 5) likes to take over other functions that were working just fine before Office got installed.

Word macros dont affect Macs so thats not really an issue.

If yer buddies are using MSN youre up against a wall because MS has closed access to their MSN network. Fire can do it only through reverse engineering and MS keeps trying to block it. So yer stuck.

If i bothered to install NAV i'd disable autoprotect too. It's been known to cause other problems besides slowdowns. Just scan for virii every few months if youre worried about them.
And you know Weed, I always thought that since MS Office was made FOR THE MAC...that it wouldn't have problems. But I guess it still does....BECAUSE IT'S MICRO$UCK!!! LOL :-) Have you seen problems occur on a MAC because of Office??
And in MAC's, how do I uninstall software? Do I just drag it's folder or icon into the trash?
Ive seen entourage take a dive, ive seen outlook express take a dive, ive seen word refuse to launch, etc etc. I tell most of my clients to use other software to avoid these problems.

In MOST cases you can uninstall by just dragging the software to the trash. However, since MS likes to be different and splatter stuff ALL over the place youll have to 1) trash the office folder 2) do a search for Microsoft and delete the results 3) Do a search for MS, delete the results 4) do a search for office, delete the results. Searching for express, word, powerpoint, excel, etc wouldnt hurt either. Delete it all!
But how about deleting just other stuff. Do I just drag it's folder or icon to the trash? By the way...AppleWorks isnt'compatible with MS documents is it?

Thanks to you...MAC's are staying with me forever!
Weed, sorry to bother again. But I did what you said. I uninstalled everything MS on my MAc. But should I unintsall IE that came with my MAC too?
Sure. Any reason to keep it when you have Mozilla, Safari, Opera, OmniWeb, Netscape, iCab, etc?..heh
No no, you make sense...it's just that I was afraid that deleting it would cause problems. As in the sense that maybe another app would need it.
Nope. Toss it.
Already did :-)
BTW...Safari is just a tiny bit faster. But some sites I go to won't load. And Safari doesn't have tabbed windows as in Navigator or Mozilla. Mozilla, I like but in order to have a link open up in a tab window I have to control click and then click on "open in a tab". As where in Navigator I just click on my middle mouse and voila!
Safari is still a beta, give it time and itll mature.

Set up application sets in your mouse control panel. Ive set my middle button to open a link in a new tab for mozilla.
I'll give it a try. If it doesn't work then I'll let you know.
