Hotmail Page cannot be displayed
Hi All,
I am using a standalone PC, windows 2000 Pro SP2, with IE6.
For some reason, I cannot access Hotmail anymore. The error I am getting is 'PAGE CANNOT BE DISPLAYED'.
Going to the hotmail login page is fine. After I enter the login and password, and press enter the message 'PAGE CANNOT BE DISPLAYED' appears after afew seconds. I reinstalled the 128 bit encryption. I have reset the IE settings to default. I have checked the Security setting SSL 2.0, SSL 3.0. I have deleted the temporary internet files (offline as well). I have installed IE6 SP1. I have uninstalled IE6 and used IE5. Nothing seems to work. I cannot uninstall IE5, it does not appear in the add/remove programs section.
I can enter secure sites without a problem. I get the same problem with Yahoo mail.
This is driving me mad. Any help is much appreciated.
Cheers

Try deleting your cookies and see if that helps and make sure your security settings are Medium or lower.

Thanks I tried that and it still gave me the same problem. I eventually installed Win2k SP3 and it fixed the problem. Dont ask why because I dont know.
Thanks for your time.
Thanks for your time.
check your privacy settings.
In the browser, Tools|Internet Options|Privacy Tab
make sure the scale is no higher than Medium High, or else hotmail will reject your login attempts.
cheers

Hi, I did all that. I even compared all the internet settings with a different PC that allowed Hotmail to work. Win2k SP3 fixed the problem somehow.

Hi - have you tried repairing IE?
Go to control panel - select add / reomve programs / choose ie / select repair ie.
If ie took a shot / like JAVA got blasted / rebuilding ie can bring back your hotmail access.

dude, i'm having the same exact problem you are. i've tried everything, including reformatting my harddrive and reinstalling windows, just to see if i could get my hotmail from the website. nothing has worked until now. this is truely bizzare but i installed netscape navigator 7.0 and it worked perfectly and the irony is unbelievable. go figure.
I had this happen to me with geocities recently.
Check your hosts file, that's how I fixed my problem.
It should be in your windows system or system 32 folder > drivers > etc (depending on windows version), double click "hosts".. open in notepad and look for hotmail and yahoo, if theyre there, delete them. (If you're having trouble finding the hosts file, do a search on your computer)
go to back to the folder in which you found hosts.. right click > properties > uncheck read-only > apply
now go back to the notepad window where the hosts file is > save as > make sure all files is highlighted and SAVE.
hopefully that works

I've been troubleshooting this problem for several days now and finally decided to read (for the first time in my life) the entire "Page cannot be displayed" message, which led me to check my security settings (Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > scroll down to security section). The box for 'Use TLS 1.0' was not checked off so I checked it, retried my Hotmail login and it worked immediately.
I've never messed with those settings before and don't know which ones are necessary. All I do know is that Hotmail used to work fine, then it didn't for the past week, now it does again after I checked off that box.

I have a similar problem. I have tried various fixes including the security settings mentioned in the "Page Cannot be displayed" error. This is common in all the browsers I run including Opera, and Firefiox. IE simply gives me the error, while Firefox gives me a "Document contains no data" error.
