Redhat 8.0 startup hangs on "Initializing USB controller (usb-uhci)"
First I have to say I'm a total newbie on Linux...

I have a dual-boot system with WinXP and RedHat 8.0, using Grub as the boot manager.

As the title says, the startup hangs when it comes to "Initializing USB controller (usb-uhci)". The only things I have done after installing is upgrading some packages (via RedHat Network), and got some ALSA-drivers for my VIA vt8233 on-board sound.

I have to get the usb to work, since I've only got a USB-mouse (Logitech Mouseman Wheel Optical). So how can I fix this?

I have three CD's and a boot disk...

Thanks in advance.

The first thing to try is to see if the system will boot now with no USB devices attached. If it still hangs initializing the USB controller then I'd suggest seeing if your motherboard vendor has a later version of the system BIOS available.

When you ran up2date dis you allow it to update the kernel as well as the other stuff?

That mouse used to come with a small USB to PS/2 converter... You don't have that presumably?

ASKER

Booted fine when I unplugged the mouse before starting. Is there anything I can upgrade (mouse driver/ usb driver/ anything) so I don't have to crawl behind my PC everytime I want to use Linux?

I haven't updated the kernel, because I don't know if the sound drivers would work on the newest.

Try plugging things in one at a time and booting, and see which one is causing the hang. When you found which one it is, either don't use that, or go download the latest drivers from the people (and of course make sure your kernel supports that device).

I will try to update the kernel, and maybe some drib\vers too.

Thanks, jlevie.
