Solaris Preventive Maintenance

Anyone has experience in performing a preventive maintenance on Solaris server and storage systems?

Do you have any idea what diagnostic programs could be run and what is the scope?

Please advise.

Download and install explorer from sunsolve, run it once a week, this gives full system status.  In an ideal world (if you know a bit of sql) you can import the text files created by explorer into a database to see when things change.

Day to day: top, vmstat, df, prtdiag can all be used to see the state of the system, scripts can be written to run these, send emails etc.

Depending on budget monitoring software can be used from the cheap and excellent Big Brother (bb4.com) to expensive behemoths like BMC patrol that can, if properly configured, do a lot of the preventative maintainance for you.

A lot of this depends on your budget and / or scripting skills

Liddler, Thanks for your detailed information

We also have some A1000, T3 and Clariion storage. What diagnostic could be run to check hardware and software healthiness?
