CDROM speed is slow

Hi,

I have a 48x Memorex CDROM and a 32x12x40 CenDyne CDRW drive. There are two options to burn a CD:
  (1) Source CD is in Memorex CDROM without on-the-fly
  (2) Source CD is in CenDyne CDRW

Theoretically, the time for reading source CD in option
(1) should be faster than option (2).
But I found that reading speed from 48x CDROM is only at
8x (1,200KB/s), and reading speed from CDRW is faster,
normally at 3,000KB/s.

I want to know what's problem with my Memorex CDROM.
Thanks.

PS. Here is the configuration for CD drives:
  IDE 2 MASTER  CenDyne CDRW
  IDE 2 SLAVE   Memorex CDROM

You don't specify where your hard disks are.  I'll presume that it is IDE SLAVE only and you are writing to disk.

If you are reading from Memorex onto hard disk the second option will be faster as you are using both cables.  Reading down one cable and writing back up the other cable.

If you are using CenDyne this will be slower as BOTH devices are sharing the same cable and data has to travel off the cable and then back up onto cable.  So only one device at a time can use the cable.

Two the CDRW and CDROM drives are in the same cable, IDE2.
CDRW is master and CDROM is slave.
After many tries on different configurations, I found that, the hardware configuration
in Windows 2000, default setting for IDE2 master is DMA mode, and setting for IDE2
slave is PIO only.

So I changed them to DMA mode, the problem disappeared.

Anyway, Thanks for your help.

Sorry for taking long time to finalize the thread.
