Hi all
my problem started after installing windows ME and it couldn't detect the CD ROM (ACER 650P 50X) or the modem both are missing from the device manager and my
computer. I have tried to disconnect the ide cable for the CD ROM, and conect it again but it is not detected at all,It has power and i used it to install windows ME
using the start up desk
also In the device manager, there are a couple of yellow flags on the ide controllers, The main controller is an ALi M5229 PCI and the other two linked to it are the primary ide dual fifo, and the secondry ide dual fifo.
These are the two with the yellow flags.
I tried to remove them but the problem still there after restarting.

this is exactly the same problem for the same IDE controller mentioned in the
question (CD ROM missing)From: malfisher

Ihave tried all the answers but it looks like it dosen't work with windows ME, it was all for win 98

your help is appreciated.

ayman

Hi ayman40,
Did U visit ALi site & download Drivers for Win ME? That should help. If that doesn't help, then maybe you should open BIOS & set BIOS defaults. Tell me what the yellow flag error is for ur IDE contrlr in Device Manager. Did U try upgrading with the wizard & allow it to install the best possible choice ? Hope this helps. Good Luck.

And ya,
Also check that Ur jumpers R correct on all the devices. Don't use cable select. Check your CDROM Firmware & see that your contrlr Firmware hub is properly configured from device manager system devices. Also check that your PIO modes are set to auto. Disable UDMA 66/+for the CDRom ide.

i tried to install the best possible choice but i got the massage that says that the best possible driver is alredy installed.
my CD ROM the ACER 650p dosen't need a driver and was working well when i was running windows 98 SE.
i haven't changed any thing in the hardwaer when i installed the windows ME

ok

go to windows update and scan for your hardware there, winME has a smaller driver system than win98SE so you will encounter more problems with ME than any other O.S.

Windows Update should sort out the issue

Hi ayman40,
Ur problem sounds really ridiculus. I still dont know why that would happen. I think what Ud do is start in safe mode, remove the device that have flags, then restart.
Upon doing so, the wiz will install whatever it likes. If it asks U to restart, do so without a thought any number of times after each or all devices.
If that doesn't work, again run the Add New Hardware Wizard from Control panel & allow a full search.
Tell me exactly what the error is in the driver properties.
Hope this helps.
And yes, Win ME is a big Pain in the as* every time for everything. It just looks funky but is stupid. Try 2K instead since it is robust & fast.

What was the reason for going to ME?  Was Win98 running perfectly fine before?  Or did you think upgrading to ME (Win99) would fix a problem you were having?  The yellow "!" marks on the IDE ports often times means you have a virus snooping those ports.

Boot into Safe Mode and see if you can remove the ports from the Device Manager and then reboot so ME can ask for the proper INF files that you need to get from the motherboard manufacturer.

the reason for going to ME is to use the windows movi maker

when i remove the ports the computer hangs and i have to shut it down.
if any one wants to help me please read this page that discribes me problem and i have followed the steps in that page but i think it dosen't work with (windows ME)
and i could not find any (noide) in the registry
also i tried to use the fdisk /mbr but didn't work
i cannot find the driver for (ALi M5229 PCI)in ALi web site
as i mentioned above

Hi ayman40,
U r right, there r no ME drivers for your device. Start in safe mode & replace your inf directory with a fresh one from some other WinME computer that uses another chipset. Else if that isnt possible, remove each and every peripherel. Remember in safe mode it wont affect your working.

Next, restart your computer and see what ME does about it. It will install the files required. See if this helps. If that doesn't work, try by installing drivers of any other similar chipset that has WinME drivers.

Also try by installing any Win9x drivers if all the above fails. Something must be done. Good Luck

Also edit your config.sys and remove any DOS driver for your CD-ROM.  It might be interferring with ME's 32-bit MSCDEX.

shonner,
Great point, I agree ayman, do what he says, its important. Also edit autoexec.bat & diable MSCDEX based utilities. Just put some mark ahead of the line so U can restore it later instead of geleating it. Good Luck

Zubin
