Hi

I am an absolute linux beginner. I have managed to get my alcatel modem to connect to the internet, but the problem is that I can not disconnect, and I: am paranoid about me permanently connected to the internet.

I used the following script to connect.

#!/bin/sh

cd /usr/src/speedtouch-1.2-beta1/
./configure && make
make install
echo Adding ppp_generic
modprobe ppp_generic
echo Adding ppp_synctty
modprobe ppp_synctty
echo Adding n_hdlc
modprobe n_hdlc
echo Adding usbcore
modprobe usbcore
echo Mounting /proc/bus/usb
mount none /proc/bus/usb -t usbdevfs
echo Adding usb-ohci
modprobe usb-ohci
echo Binding modem
modem_run -m -f /usr/src/mgmt/mgmt.o
echo Starting service
pppd call adsl

My kernel is 2.4.19 and I am using Mandrake 9.

Cheers

Adrian

the command

killall pppd

will disconnect you, but instead of doing that, put up a good firewall and dont worry about it

http://majorwoo.dynup.net:1024/pub/rc.firewall

is a very nice iptables firewall, very well commented -> add a call to

/etc/ppp/ip-up.local

and whenever your IP changes it will rerun the script -> good stuff
