A couple of links to start you off will be best...
I am guessing that you want to run a terminal on your Windows machine from a Linux server (or desktop), or maybe you wjust want to get some UNIX compatibility.
Either way you can start by loading CygWin on your XP machine. Its free (GPL) and works great for me. (I'm on an xdmcp term running Windows XP with a fullscreen session from a Mandrake Server.
http://www.cygwin.com/xfree/ is a good starting point, with docs.

is a procedure for an Linux term on your XP machine. K. Puckett put this great tutorial up. It also has step by step procedures for installing Cygwin.
Have fun!
