i need to make a bastion host which is running sendmail 8.10.1 and sits in the DMZ to accept all incoming emails and forward it into an internal ms exchange server. i also need it to act as a relay server to the outside world for the exchange server.

can anyone point me in the right direction?

www.sendmail.org.
And 8.10.1 is woefully out of date from a security standpoint.

You might want to consider exim (www.exim.org) as an alternative unless you really have to run sendmail. It's has a better security history and is much easier to configure.
