What type of access you need? Windows file shareing? The only way is SAMBA. www.samba.org

Use Samba, it will allow your Windows 2000 server to map a drive to the Unix server.

Do a rpm -qa|grep samba on the Unix server to see if it is already installed, with RedHat it comes with the standard install, so it may with your unix server too.

Find the smb.conf file (usually in /etc/samba) and configure it.  In the file you can set the Workgroup or Domain name, the host allow setting and then go to the Share Definitions section to set up what folders or drives you want the 2000 server to be able to map to.

Here is an example to allow a connection to the data volume:

[data]

  comment = data
  path = /data
  browseable = yes
  writeable = yes

After you finish with the smb.conf file you need to create a user account.  I suggest creating the account with the same username and password you use to log into the Win2000 server.

The command to create the samba account is:

smbpasswd -a acctname

you will be given the prompt to enter and confirm your password.  You will get an error the first time you do this because the password file didn't exist, but it will be created for you.

after you do this enter: smbclient -L localhost -U acctname to make sure the server can access it.

The last step is to start samba with this command:

/etc/rc.d/init.d/smb start

you can check status with /etc/rc.d/init.d/smb status
