I have WIN 2000 Pro on a laptop. A friend of mine borrowed it and had some trouble.  He tried to solve his problem by starting all(i mean all) of the services on automatic.  Now i cant shut down any of the services.  they start to close but about half way on the progress bar it slows down (1 bar every 30 sec) after it reaches the end it says that it failed to stop the service.

I tried starting up in safe mode and resetting the properties for the services to manual or disabled to know avale..the hour glass comes up but the service proerties do not change.  i have to use task manager to end the program.  any suggestions that may help me get these services stopped..   thanks

You could try changing the startup type in the registry.
Be extremely careful when editing the registry directly though.

Run Regedit, go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\

Find the particular service you want, for example the Plug and Play service. Expand the key relating to that service and you will see a start entry.

Change the value for this entry to one of the following

2 = Automatic
3 = Manual
4 = Disabled

Again, if you have never used regedit before, be very careful.

Change the value of the services you are having problems with to either 3 or 4, and then reboot.
Good luck, let me know how you get on.
