Wacky Console Font Characters

I am using Linux RedHat 8.0 and experiencing console characters that appear to be corrupt.

I've tried using the command setfont which enables you to set the screen font types.

I keep getting a

put_font: PIO_FONT error!

Help does anyone know how to sort this one out?

Setting the locale in /etc/sysconfig/i18n to

LANG="en_US"
SUPPORTED="en_US:en"
SYSFONT="lat0-sun16"
SYSFONTACM="iso01"

is supposed to work after reboot.

I only had problems with my man pages.  This was corrected by setting an alias

alias man="LANG=US_EN man"
