vti files corrupted?

I have created a website with FrontPage 2002, and am having trouble uploading it properly to my webhost, Netfirms ~ a host that supports FrontPage extensions.

My hover buttons are not working properly once uploaded, although they preview in IE fine when working from FrontPage. Also, there are quite a few pictures on my site, and a number of these do not show up, although everything checks out fine in FrontPage.

In addition, I am getting a couple of different error messages when uploading. The first was:

502 Proxy Error
Proxy Error The proxy server received an invalid response from an
upstream server. The proxy server could not handle the request POST
/_vti_bin/_vti_aut/author.exe. Reason: Document contains no data

After contacting support, the host said the vti files were probably corrupt, removed all my files from their server and asked me to upload again.

Then I got an error message stating server connection timed out. Another try produced this error message:

500 Proxy Error
Proxy Error The proxy server could not handle the request POST
/_vti_bin/_vti_aut/author.exe. Reason: Host not found

And still, the hover buttons do not work, and some of my pictures are dropped.

Now the hosting company has reported the error to their development team and I am awaiting further instructions. I'm getting very frustrated with this process!

Has anyone ever heard of this kind of error from FrontPage 2002 before? Is Netfirms just blowing smoke at me?

first thing you need to do is remove the fp2k extensions from the server, then reinstall them, then you can republish them.

as far as the hover buttons, look in the code for
'codebase="xxxx", where xxx is the location of the fpclass files.  they should be in a folder _fpclass and if the htm file is in the root, then 'codebase="_fpclass/" and the hover buttons will work.

if you still have problems with netfirms, i can host you, i host websites on an apache server running freebsd with fp2k extensions installed.

Tell them to check the server extensions and recalculate the web. This should fix it. It's a lot easier than reinstalling extensions on the server. (Which I DOUBT you'll get them to do -- I certainly wouldn't)

Well, now I don't know whether to award points, withdraw the question, or what! I finally got so frustrated with my site that I redid it without the hover buttons! It may well be that one of these suggestions would have worked, as might the instructions I received from the webhost, which are as follows:

With regards to your frontpage issue, we are currently investigating this specific error message that you are receiving.  I can confirm that if you try to publish again immediately after you receive this error message, you should be successful in your secondary publish.

Rest assured that we are looking to resolve this particular problem as soon as possible.

If your site requires fp themes, please remove them initially from your files locally on your computer and then try to publish again.

You can reapply your themes after you publish by doing the following:

REAPPLYING THEMES TO YOUR SITE:

a.  From your frontpage program, click File -> Open Web
b.  Enter: http://username.netfirms.com
c.  Enter your userid and password (This will connect you directly to your ftp account on our server)
d.  Click Format -> Themes
e.  Select all pages and then the theme you would like to add
f.   Click OK and then yes.
g.  This may take several minutes as the theme is added to all of your webpages.
h.  Again, we ask for your patience during this phase as themes are slowly added.

Please then refresh your browser and try accessing your site again.

I would try this, but frankly I am so disgusted with the difficulty of using FrontPage hover buttons (this is not the first time I've had the hover buttons cause a problem with a supposedly compatible host), that I don't have the energy to try again! I think the revised site looks almost as good without them - www.tmbstudios.com

here is the exact code from a site, where i helped them with their hover buttons.'
to see the example, go to http://www.homesteadfinishing.com/asturo3.htm

for your server 500 problem, it usually means the fp extensions are not installed properly.  what has to be done, is the fp extensions removed, then reinstalled.  you will need to do a complete republish of the web site to get things working properly.

make sure you do a recalculate of the web site, check your reports live on the web site.

Hi,

Your host Netfirms faces problems with FP extensions,  I have seen many posts on that.

The have to upgrade the extensions to 2002, it is much better.

Try to ask a friend who has a web space and ask his/her permission to just upload your web.

I mean,  since it is not working on NetFirms try it on another host as a test and see if it works.

FP hover buttons are java applets -- they really don't have anything to do with the SERVER.

HOwever, anybody with a non-java enabled browser (and that's IE 6 unless they've downloaded java from Sun) won't see them. Anybody with a slow connection might not see them. If the java class/jar files don't get uploaded (and they might not), they won't work.

There are plenty of other, much better, ways to do hovers/mouseovers. MUCH better.

I've basically come to the conclusion that FrontPage hover buttons are horrible!
