Disk Verify/Repair: Cannot Read Disk

Power Mac G4.  OS 9.1.

Running Disk Verify or Disk Repair (multiple times as instructed in Help):

The utility runs for about 60 seconds and then comes back with something like CANNOT READ FROM DISK.

Can this be repaired?

First, no reason to be running 9.1 on a G4. That machine is more than capable of running 9.2.2, which fixes many bugs and improves performance. The downloads are even free.

Second, Disk First Aid is not nearly as robust as Norton Disk Doctor or TechTool. It's probably repairable, or at least diagnosable, via either of those tools, not with disk first aid.

Weed is right.

If the disk is not physically damaged (and even then, if only some sectors), the disk is still usable.

Next question:  Can you get your data.  Probably, some things take more work than others.

You did not say what you did before you started having the problem.  It is possible that the data is all gone, depending on what was done, but that is unlikely.

Can you tell more?
