I have a server running MS NT4.0 service Pack6 and MS Exchange 5.5 service Pack4.
The problem has been that we have had so much junk mail and so our server was used as an Open Relay.
How can i guard against unauthorised acces to our server?

So that it will not be used as an open relay?

Regards.

The Routing tab of the Internet Mail Service Properties sheet—Do not reroute incoming SMTP mail and Reroute incoming SMTP mail (required for POP3/IMAP4 support)—control mail relaying.

Exchange Server 5.5 post-Service Pack 2 (SP2) hotfix addresses a specific Exchange mail-relaying vulnerability. This fix plugged a security hole that let the Internet Mail Service (IMS) relay encapsulated SMTP messages.

If you're using POP2 ot IMAP on the client side or want to relay for your internal users private accounts or just want to learn more check out http://www.exchangeadmin.com/Articles/Index.cfm?ArticleID=7696
