How to determine whether a object is vector type?

I would like to have a variable type(the only one I can think of is Object) that able to hold Vector and String.

   Object a = null;
   a = new Vector();
   a = new String("");

   If a is vector then do something else do nothing;
   How to determine if a is vector or not. There is not such method a.isVector().

Please advise.

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

if (a instanceof Vector)
else if (a instanceof String)
