Flight Simulator - claim Hardware Acceleration not available

My win2k installation used to run Flight Simulator 2002 quite well I believe. But recently I've moved the hard drive onto other machines.

It is now in a machine with a 1.7G Intel processor, with 256M ram and an Nvidia graphics card - a good machine.

But Flight Simulator claims it has to start up in Safe Mode because my machine is currently not capable of hardware acceleration.

Any help much appreciated.

What do you mean you "moved the hard drive" here?

Ok, that was not clear originally....

I think you now have an invalid or incomplete W2K installation.  What you've done is not proper and W2K is not designed to be changed in this way.

My suggestion is to perform a clean install of W2K on the present hardware.

Hi again..

well actually win2k wouldn't fire up when I put the hdd in this machine so I did do a reinstall on top of my existing installation, thereby keeping all the installed progs.

Everything worked fine except flight sim which presented the behaviour I spoke about - and now it works fine (flew from darwin to oenpelli last night).

I'm interested in your remark 'win2k is not designed to be changed in this way...'  It sounds very authoritative, like you very much know what you are talking about.. have an intimate knowledge of win2k.

If that's so perhaps you can tell me what it is about win2k that doesn't like shifting platforms? I'd be very interested.

And what about XP? Does it like it any better? (I'd think not). This machine had XP on it when I got it and so I played with it a bit. I don't like it at all. It seems horrible to me. Literally horrible. Have you got any pros and/or cons about it?

That hdd is now the master on IDE2.  Any way I can set up the system from here to dual boot either my win2k off my hdd (mastering IDE1) or that XP disk? I'd suppose I could do it by setting the BIOS but that's a bit clumsy. (And it's no big deal... I'm perfectly happy without it)

thanks for your interest and I'll be interested in any further comments you might have.

Hi -

I'm having the same problem on W2k with FS2002. When I load it up, it says "in safe mode, unable to use hardware acceleration". I don't have the option to enable it, greyed out. When I checked the directx cp the 3-D acc was greyed out (ironically, can't find the directx screen anywhere now?).

I've tried upgrading to SP3 and installing Dx9a to no avail? I feel like pulling my hair out!

David

I'd like to help you, David, but I don't know any more than I've already said. I found 'enable...' and it worked for me. What you can do if 'enable...' isn't available I don't really know.

I'd do a lot of reinstalling if it was me. Uninstall DX and uninstall FSim and then repair install W2K and reinstall Dx and Fsim.  Also check the Bios options carefully and any graphics card options I could find and all display options in control panel. Then I'd post a question on experts exchange... :)

All the best... if you do find an answer please post it FOI (for our information).

Hi -
Sorry, I'm not really sure what you mean by PAQ.

I am still experiencing the same problem. I've tried installing Direct X9, installing the drivers for my graphics card etc. I am now getting flickering while on some webpages also.

I did find at one stage a Direct X control panel where 3-D acceleration was greyed out. Since I removed it and re-installed it I haven't been able to install it. Any assistance appreciated (if I need to split the question, you might let me know how)

David

I don't know what PAQ is, either, David but I know what's going on - the moderators have emailed me to say the question hasn't been answered for so long and they want to close it - what do I think?

I have said yes, close it. Close it as unanswered because though I found my own answer we still haven't got an answer for you.

I would say again to you that possibly your best route is to get the newest drivers off the internet for your video cards, sound cards, whatever (this is a video issue though, I think for sure) and install them. If no improvement I'd reinstall the operating system and then reinstall FS.  You don't say it if ever did work?
