joining two pcs with ethernet cable

can i network two pcs using onboard network cards without using a network hub but using only a cable i have tried but each pc can only find itself on the network and not the other

You certainly can, you need a network crossover cable.

As netnightmare said, you need a crossover cable and you have setup you ip have same Subnet mask. E.g.
Computer 1
IP : 192.168.123.1   Subnet :255.255.255.0
Computer 2
IP : 192.168.123.2   SubNet :255.255.255.0
