I need to install a HP 8550 LazerJet Colour Lazer Printer on WinXP Pro.

1. Does the printer have to be connected to hub/switch.

1.a If not, when i connect the printer straight to a computer using a network cable, does the cable need to be straight or crossover?

2. If i connect it to a hub - does it need to be straight or crossover (pretty obviously straight, but just to be sure).

3. How does the printer add itself to a network? Does it assign itself an IP, get a IP from a DHCP server?

4. Any more usefull info on the installation proceedure would be great.

I am not new to PC's or Networks, but i have never done one of these network printers before - just want to be prepared before going to see the client. Dont want to look like a printer-virgin!

Cheers all.

1. No, but this is the best option.

1a. Crossover Wired

2. Straight Wired

3. It defaults to DHCP but you can assign an address during installation if the network uses static addressing

4. not much to tell, whack the printer in the hub, run the cd from any of the machines and keep clicking next ;-) it's all pretty self explainatory if you do need to do any specific configuration.

Hi again,

further on point 1, the reason this is prefferable it future expansion will be much easier, however if they forsee no more client machines for a while the crossover solution is cheapest in the short term.
