Transparent Background Photoshop 6.0

Every time I follow instructions for a transpanent background and then insert it into powerpoint I still get the white background or an error message.  Can someone help me with instructions on how to do this?  I'll be ever so thankful

in photoshop make sure your background layer is transparent or hidden, 'save for web' - save as a gif with transparent check box selected - set your matte colour and save it. import your gif into power point and your transparent areas will still be there - same for a png.
Try giving your graphic a similar background as your Powerpoint Presentation, and then save it as a .jpg or .bmp file.  Then go to your Powerpoint Presentation and choose the insert, picture, from file.  Once your graphic is placed on the Powerpoint slide, right click along the bottom of Powerpoint and choose the "Picture Toolbar".  The Picture Toolbar has a tool that can "Set Transparent Color".  Choose this tool and select the color you want transparent on your image.  This should make the color you want transparent.
go to the channels palette and drop every channel you have there, that does not corresponds to the image channels (RGB, CYMK, etc), then try again.

If there is a black channel there try dropping it and if it does not works, replace it by a white channel.

to fill the channel with white, just select it and use the paint bucket.
