"Rowset not bookmarkable"/"Recordset not updatable"

I am using an adodc DataGrid to display an adodb recordset, which is its datasource.

Using RowColChange I am displaying records from the recordset in masked edit boxes for editing.

However, I either get a "rowset not bookmarkable" (on transGrid. recordsource = rec) or a "recordset not updatable" (on rec.AddNew) depending on the connection parameters i use.

Does anyone know either a suitable combination of parameters, or a better way of coding in order to both get an editable recordset and display the recordset in a datagrid? code below.

Private Sub Form_Load()
    SQL = "SELECT * FROM [action] WHERE user_name = '" & Logon_User_Name & "' ORDER BY start_date_time DESC"
    rec.Open SQL, conTimeADO, adOpenDynamic 'if i use adLockOptimistic here i get the bookmarkable error, if i don't i get the updtate error.
    Set transGrid.DataSource = rec
End Sub

Private Sub transGrid_RowColChange(LastRow As Variant, ByVal LastCol As Integer)
    mebDate.Text = rec.Fields(1)
    mebTime.Text = rec.Fields(1)
    mebCCentre.Text = rec.Fields(2)
    mebTask.Text = rec.Fields(3)
End Sub
Private Sub cmdInsert_Click()
End Sub
