Reset pwr-On Pswd on older Compaq LTE Elite 4/75 Laptop
Does anyone know how to reset the power-on password for the older Compaq LTE Elite series laptops?
I have several that the bios reports the password is set, and it won't let me unset it, however non is asked for and it boots. So you say what's the problem? Well these are used for an application where I dont' want a surprise inability to logon due to a password glitch appearing and I'd be more comfortable if it were cleared. What I'm assuming is someone stored a blank password.
Comapqs site says take it to the dealer, but these are older thatn most dealers techs. They are workhorses and I love them but want to clear the PW's. There is a jumper on the MB that I expect will/might do it but wanted to know a more formal procedure before I fiddle and screw one up.
Thanks very much for the time to help,
Scott

if you can get to the motherboard can you find a CMOS battery? I have never seen the motherboard of a Compaq LTE Elite 4/75 but you may want to try and remove, let sit, and then replace the CMOS battery (if one exists that you can see)

I can get to it, but nope, tried that, dosen't clear it.
you may need to keep it out for as long as 30 minutes.

I left it out overnight. No battery, no cmos battery, no power.
THanks for the suggestion..

For the archive the answer is:
Open the PC kb cover. Move CMOS short pins from 1-2 to 2-3 and powerup. Accept config changes. power down. Move jumper back. replace cover. Password is cleared.
