I want to upgrade the hard drive in a mac, but I don't want to have to reinstall all the software.  Is it possible to install a new hard drive and copy the original HD and all of its data without having to reinstall all software?  I know it's unorthodox but there must be a way.  Thanks.

Yeah, absolutely. As long as youre using OS 9 or below and not OS X. OS X doesnt like to be dragged across drives but OS 9 doesn't care and neither do apps. It's not like windows.
