establishing an ipx connection through the internet

hi,
i want to establish an ipx connection through the internet because i want to play an old game (Diablo - Hellfire) directly with a friend but this game can only connect to an other user by a modem connection (but i got DSL and my friend too), LAN (IPX/SPX) or direct cabel connection.
i thought of simulating an IPX-LAN with a program. is that possible?

we both got winXP.

can anybody help me with this problem?

I think you can do it like this:

1. establish an IPSEC (ms vpn) link between the two boxes
2. enable IPX over the vpn virtual network card

you may find that the "ipx" that the game requires is not the one you have under xp though - many early games used the dos Novell version of ipx. if it will tolerate microsoft ipx you may be in with a chance.

another possibility is a virtual nullmodem - something like this:
