Recovering a RAID Drive with Red Hat 7.3

I have two 40GB hard drives using RAID under Red Hat 7.3. Recently one of the drives failed and I have put in an unpartitioned identical replacement. I have tried "raidhotadd" and it looks like it will move the data over to  new drive. There is one catch. It looks like I need to partition the new drive identically to the old before "raidhotadd" will work correctly for all the partitions of the old drive. I tried fdisk, and due to my inexperience, couldn't get it partioned correctly.

How can I get my data from the existing disk to the new one?

OK. I think I figured out the fdisk part. However, I noticed that the default geometry of the replacement hard disk is different from the good, working disk.

HDA (with the data) is set at 255 heads, 63 sectors, and 4865  cylinders.

HDC (new drive) is showing 16 heads, 63 sectors, and 77545 cylinders. This matches exact data printed on the outside of all the drives.

This information is coming directly from fdisk.

How do I change the geometry of HDC to match HDA?

I think I got things to move over OK. However, I am noticing some strange entries in the boot log statring with:

The goemetry problem is from the computer BIOS. Check the disk setting in BIOS, they should be the same. Your problem is that one disk is translated (LBA) and one is not. Change the second also to LBA.

In the BIOS they are (and have been) identically set to LBA  -  4865c, 255h, 63s. I even let the BIOS autodetect them to get those results.

Why does the kernel think that CHS=77554/16/63 for hdc? How can I change this? I can take the server down and reset the new drive. I would just need to know what to do.

I'm pretty close to doing what is needed on the RAID recovery link that you gave me. How do I get hdc to have a boot capable hdc1? Also how do I find and set the swap file on hdc?

First try to erase the MBR of the disk: something like cat /dev/null > /dev/hdc (hdc is the new disk, isn't it ?) This will simply overwrite the MBR of the disk. Reboot the machine and create the partitions again. Now you should get the same partitions for both disks.
If this doesn't work, you still have the option of setting the disk parametrs (heads/cylinders/sectors) in fdisk and partition again.

I'm not sure I got your last questions right. You can use fdisk -l to find out what partition should be what and then check /etc/fdisk. As for testing, just take the other disk out :)

To get a little bit more explicit: MBR contains the CHS values for the drive. When you partition the disk you change the partitioning entries, and not the CHS info. If MBR has been created with different values, these will not be changed by simply partitioning it. You have to recreate the MBR. The [PTBL]entry in the log means that the kernel is using the values read from the MBR and not the values detected (which are different).

I formatted my drive (hdc) with "dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hdc". When rebooting I got the following messages:

As noted earlier, my BIOS reads both drives identically as LBA CHS=4865/255/63. Why does Linux still see hdc wrong? How do I change it?

I thin the proper sequence is:
1. dd ... (erase offending MBR)
2. reboot
3. fdsik (with creating a new MBR)
4. reboot

unfortunately I don't have any system that I can test on right now (except my wife's w2k, but that action would result in a hungry me, at least for a couple of days:).
Anyway you can always set the CHF with fdisk (in advanced mode). Don't forget to reboot after that.

I must be doing something wrong in fdisk. I went into advanced mode, changed the CHS values, printed the partition table (but created no partitions) which read the new values (4865/255/63). I then wrote the values without error and rebooted the machine. It still did not change the values in the boot process.

I called Seagate (the manufacturer) and they told me that the values are not changeable... which I think is BS. My drive model numbers are the same. The CHS data on the outside of the labels are the same(77545/16/63). The CHS label data on the outside of the failed drive is the same as the removed, failed drive(77545/16/63). My BIOS reads them the same (4865/255/63) which is the values I want. Just in the boot process, they read like the log file above.... What gives?

OK. I fdisk'ed hdc, set in hda's geometry, partitioned it to the same parameters of the existing hda, wrote the fdisk data and rebooted the computer. I have not transferred the actual disk data from hda yet.

The good news is that the computer holds it's geometry data in fdisk. The bad news is that the kernel still reports hdc wrong. Also, it has [PTBL]. How can I correct that so it has the exact entries of hda?

I have not done the raidhotadd yet. The process seems to take  about an hour and a half. I didn't want to do it until I was convinced that the drive was set correctly. I am questioning the entries in the startup log:

I think that at this point you can try to reconstruct the RAID. Why it behaves like that, I don't understand, but on Mondsay I'll have the necessary hardware and I'll try to find out what's wrong with your hdd detection.

Went back to hover mode. The replacement drive failed. Seagate is sending me a replacement for their replacement...

I didn't really look for one but I scanned the drive before install and didn't see anything like that.....I hate refurbs....

OK. New #2 drive is in place. Things are running fine.. I think. I fdisk'd HDC, changed the CHS to match HDA. Then I added the matching partitions of HDA. I then raidhotadd the data to from mdX to hdcX

/messages still reports things the way that things are set in previous parts of this thread. [PTBL] still exist. CHS still gets reported differently. Is this a correct install? Ia the RAID working?
