Photoshop has trouble reading desktop

All my adobe applications ie photoshop and image ready seem to have trouble readin the desktop. Any time i 'navigate' to the desktop to open a file within one of these applications, the application locks up. If I can be bothered waiting, i'm quite sure the list of files on the desktop eventually shows up. Why does it take so long to read the desktop, and can I fix this?
Thanks.

Mac? PC? Are you navigating with the file browser tab or with the open/save dialog? Are you viewing previews?

On a PC just using the open/save dialog. I am not viewing previews (only when I click on a file the preview shows up).
The same problem does NOT occur when I use the file browser, even if the file browser is showing previews.
The desktop contains nothing unusual on it.

Both. I just updated to version 7.01 and the problem still occurs.

Doesn't sound like a Photoshop issue.  What operating system are you running?

I'm running winME... but I only have this problem when loading files with photoshop/image ready... every other application seems to be able to read the desktop fine.

Try going to your desktop the long way:

my computer -> c:\documents and settings\ and find your way to the desktop folder, see if that helps. Sometimes these Windows shortcuts are everything but.

Yeah, going to desktop the long way produces the same result.
Okay, I decided to try something, I moved all the items off my desktop into another folder and then one by one moved them back.
I basically found the culprit to be a shortcut to a web site. I have other web site shortcuts, but one particular shortcut caused photoshop to lock up.
Anyone know any reasons this might've happened? All other applications were still ok.
The link was to http://www.job-serve.com.au/. Very strange.

I linked that exact site to my desktop, no result. I am running XP though, so maybe it's a ME problem... It's in these — albeit few — situations mac people are glad they're not climbing thru windows, and I must say — with quite a sigh — I do agree with them sometimes.

Yeah, its quite stupid really. So many tiny problems which make no sense. Oh well, at least I know how to fix the problem if it happens again.
Thanks everyone for all the help anyway.

Hi wadj,

Maybe it's because of the browse function that shows a thumbnail of each "image"-file in the folder. It could be an error in the software that makes it believe that the shortcut on your desktop is an image and tries to open it without success. But it sounds strange indeed...
