i am getting cannot open server error while connecting
visual basic to oracle 8i.please tell a suggestion for my problem with steps needed to avoid this error.

I think this is what you are looking for
CrystalReport.Application.LogOnServer("pdsodbc.dll","DSNNAME", "DBQ=<crwdc>=databasename", "dbusername","dbpassword")

Depending on how he is connecting to the database, one of the comments should have provided the answer.
