r5 clients are no problem at all.  Adding an R5 server to your R4 environment is fine as well, just leave all your mail routing documents the way they are.  In R5 you don't need all the connection documents and things, but in R4 you still do.

However, in my environment,we have to use R4 Domino server.
It is our std. & we also need to read the double bytes characters email, so, I just can concern about R5 gateway & R5 clients. Any comments or other solution?

there is no "gateway" in R5.  The R5 server's router (nrouter.exe) speaks SMTP natively.   If you want an R5 smtp "gateway" machine, you'll have to install R5.

On the client side, there is no issue -- R5 clients can use an R4 server just fine.

Now, why can't you read double byte in R4?  It should work, I know for a fact it works OUTBOUND smtp, not sure I've tried inbound but I see no reason why not.
