Capturing Video Stream

Help me to identify a utility in linux which captures the video stream and records the same and stores in hard disk.

I am using "Play Tv Pro", TV Tuner card with "bttv" driver supporting Video4Linux.

I tried with "MJPEG" tools. But it is for zoran based cards, not for bttv based. But it helps in software encoding for bttv based cards, but problem occurs in play back.So i cannot able to identify whether the recording is successful or not.

I also tried with "FAME" option. The utility records successfully. But the recorded video stream is not clear and it is jumping.

Since i am not having TV Cable connection, I fed the "Composite" output of Digital Camera to Tv Tuner card as video input wich is of PAL format.

So help me to identify a utility which captures the Video stream from "composite" input, records and playback the same.

Personally, I use "streamer" from xawtv package ( and MPlayer (

For streamer, use "streamer -h" to get some examples.

You could also try MythTV ( IIRC it also uses mencoder to capture.
