how do i split files to store on cd?

what size is the file???
you can use WinRAR or FileSplit to break the files into required size.
with winrar you need to add the file into an archieve and specify volume size while doing that.
while winsplit is meant for direct file splitting.

you can try to download these from www.download.com

once you have split the files, burn them on cd along with the filesplit/winrar and then reassamble the pieces at the other end

well there are programs out there for file splitting.....freeware....

also depending on the cdrw program you are using you may be able to use the 'span' option........

this file splitter is very small and very good

If you don't mind the shareware notions, use winrar. It is good and trustworthy and very good compression (better then zip):

If you are splitting the file for long term backup, then you could try using a program like Symantec Ghost. This offers excellent compression and you can split the files into as many volumes as you require.

if you're trying to break up that 1 gb movie so that it'll fit on cd's but still be playable, you'd need something like easy video splitter:
