RIS, Unattended and Sysprep can all be used to install software on
a client machine from a server? Do these programs store an image
of the req software on the server.? Can they all be used to install
operating systems on the client?

How does it transfer to the client? By remote booting?
do all machines have to have a PXE BIOS to boot to RIS,
Unattend and Sysprep.

Which method do you most use to install operating systems
and software? and why? does this involve booting via PXE?
what do you do if a machine doesnt support PXE?

for sysprep instructions see this link:

Sysprep and RIS are both image based. RIS can use pxe booting or for systems without that capability can boot from a system geerated floppy. See this link :

Unattended installation is my prefered method. It can be a bit tricky to set all of the prper switches and such, but you can save it to floppy and edit it as necessary. Unattended installs are just that; a standard installation which requires no input from the end user as the answers are all supplied by the file on the floppy. You of course do need an os disk and it is not performed over the network. see:
http://www.tech-hints.com/unatt.html      or do a google search for windows unattended install. The appropriate switches can be found in the deployment tools folder of your win2k server disk.

Each method ,of course, has it's drawbacks. unattended needs a cd for each pc (or waiting till one is finished and swap), and a seperate floppy (unless you want to edit the same floppy repeatedly- it's fairly easy though)
RIS can currently be used for Win2k or XP with a downloadable upgrade. Image based installs can be tricky, sometimes minor hardware differences can be the difference between success and failure.

We use RIS.

You can boot up ris froma a flobby or a network boot (if you have such bios)

There is only kept one version of each file, so multible images doesn't take up much space.

What we do:
We only have images of computers, setup with all drivers and service packs. All software is setup using a scripts.
