I found a solution to this myself, it seems to be a bug when using Jet native connection to the database (I was using a Access MDB database), if the connection is changed to OLE DB or ODBC then the problem doesnt occur. There are a couple of articles in the crystal KB on it.<br />
I am going to ask Community support to delete this question. thanks for you help anyway

When I launch a report using the report viewer control from Visual Studio .NET then I get this Database Login window appearing which asks for a user name and password.<br />

This only happens on one box I have which is running XP Embedded, on two other machines runnning XP Pro this login window doesn't appear. Would anyone have some clues on why this window is appearing only on this particular machine?<br />

Crystal Reports is a business intelligence application from SAP SE. It is used to graphically design data connections and report layouts from a wide range of data sources including Excel spreadsheets, Oracle, SQL Server databases and Access databases, BusinessObjects Enterprise business views, and local file-system information.
