If this is for a single PC go to run and open the registry editor "regedit" navigate to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Current verision\Winlogon
Change the AutoAdminLogon to = 1 default is 0, then change the DefaultDomainName, DefaultUserName, and DefaultPassword to the desired value's. The next time you startup it will auto logon with the supplied credential. To force a logon prompt hold hold down the shift key at logon.

Hello Okdocky,

If the user account is local you can logon as administrator and reset the password. If you don't know tha admin password you can boot to a DOS prompt and navigate to c:\winnt\system32\config and delete the SAM file. The password should be blank when you restart windows. If your disk is NTFS formatted, you can not mount the hard drive in DOS, you would use NTFS4Dos by winternal  to mount the drives so that you can delete the SAM, thanks...

You can boot on bootable cd and erase the password: download boot cd image here:

burn to cd-r with cdRwin or other writer software that supports "bin" format

Now boot on cd to erase your password
